An Idea!

I have a thought that we could transform coastal deserts by using the abundant renewable energy (sun/wind) to desalinate sea water and produce fresh water for supporting both a human population as well as agricultural use.  I don't expect that this would ever be profitable in a financial sense, but I think an investment in the infrastructure for something like this could have significant humanitarian and ecological benefits in the long run.  This would represent net new carbon capture in the form of plant-focused agriculture, as well as supporting human population with entry-level jobs, housing, and food production in areas that are currently support very sparse if any human civilization.  A focus on process and environmental sustainability throughout should also maximize the impact by allowing it to continue for long periods of time with minimal additional financial investment.
